What Does Maffucci Syndrome Look Like?

There are a variety of rare foot conditions that might affect some individuals. For example, Maffucci syndrome is a rare foot condition. Many patients often ask podiatrists what the feet look like when they are affected by Maffucci syndrome. The answer is that the feet can become covered in growths that are characteristics of the condition. These growths are essentially known as multiple enchondromas, and they are ultimately made up of cartilage. If an individual has Maffucci syndrome, it is possible for it to be noticeable at birth. However, in other cases, the condition might not be noticeable until the age of 5. If you are someone that wants to learn more about Maffucci syndrome, then it is suggested that you contact a podiatrist today for more information.

Some foot conditions may require additional professional care. If you have any concerns, contact Joan Oloff, DPM of Los Gatos Foot and Ankle . Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Rare Foot Conditions

The majority of foot conditions are common and can be treated by a podiatrist.  Standard diagnostic procedures are generally used to identify specific conditions and treatment can be rendered. A podiatrist also treats rare foot conditions which can be difficult to diagnose and may need extra attention and care.

There are many rare foot conditions that can affect children. Some of these can include:

  • Freiberg’s disease
  • Kohler’s disease
  • Maffucci syndrome

Freiberg’s disease - This can be seen as a deterioration and flattening of a metatarsal bone that exists in the ball of the foot. It typically affects pre-teen and teenage girls, but can affect anyone at any age. Symptoms that can accompany this can be swelling, stiffness, and the patient may limp.

Kohler’s disease - This often targets the bone in the arch of the foot and affects younger boys. It can lead to an interruption of the blood supply which ultimately can lead to bone deterioration. The patient may limp or experience tenderness, swelling, and redness.

Maffucci syndrome - This affects the long bones in a child’s foot leading to the development of abnormal bone lesions. They are benign growths and typically develop in early childhood and the bones may be susceptible to breaking.

A podiatrist can properly diagnose and treat all types of rare foot conditions. If your child is affected by any of these symptoms or conditions, please don’t hesitate to call our office so the correct treatment method can begin.

Hiking and Foot Pain

If you are a hiker, you probably relish in the fresh air and exercise hiking gives you. However, as with any other athletic pursuit, hiking can cause injury or discomfort to the feet. If feet are not well-soled, well-rested, or stretched and strengthened for hiking participation, foot problems can easily arise. Foot pain after hiking is typically symptomatic of a foot injury. Repetitive stress on the feet or carrying a heavy backpack while hiking can cause such injuries. Common hiking foot injuries include capsulitis or inflammation of tissues surrounding a joint. This often happens around the ball of the foot and can lead to pain and swelling. This can also affect just one toe, and if left unattended, can lead to hammertoe. Pain might alternatively be centered in the heel area and cause a heel spur and/or plantar fasciitis. If you hike for exercise or pleasure, make sure you wear well-fitted shoes for the activity, stretching and strengthening foot exercises prior to exercising, and rest between hikes. If foot pain persists, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist for a diagnosis and treatment plan.

Pain, aching, burning, bruising, tenderness, tightness or stiffness, sensation loss, difficulty moving, and swelling are the most common symptoms.

Treatment

Just as symptoms vary depending upon the injury, so do treatment options. A common treatment method is known as the RICE method. This method involves rest, applying ice, compression and elevating the afflicted foot or ankle. If the injury appears to be more serious, surgery might be required, such as arthroscopic or reconstructive surgery. Where Is Morton’s Neuroma Pain Felt?

Morton’s neuroma is a benign foot condition that causes pain between the third and fourth toes. Wearing tight shoes, such as high heels, may cause the nerve between these two toes to become compressed or irritated, which may cause pain and discomfort. Some patients explain the sensation of Morton’s neuroma as stepping on a marble or small rock stuck inside their shoe. Some also say it feels like pins and needles. Relief may come from wearing custom-made orthotics, in addition to performing stretches to help strengthen the foot. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to remove the affected nerve for permanent healing. If you have pain in this part of your foot, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist who can effectively diagnose and treat Morton’s neuroma.

Morton’s neuroma is a very uncomfortable condition to live with. If you think you have Morton’s neuroma, contact Joan Oloff, DPM of Los Gatos Foot and Ankle . Our doctor will attend to all of your foot care needs and answer any of your related questions.

Morton's neuroma is a painful foot condition that commonly affects the areas between the second and third or third and fourth toe, although other areas of the foot are also susceptible. Morton’s neuroma is caused by an inflamed nerve in the foot that is being squeezed and aggravated by surrounding bones.

What Increases the Chances of Having Morton’s Neuroma?

  • Ill-fitting high heels or shoes that add pressure to the toe or foot
  • Jogging, running or any sport that involves constant impact to the foot
  • Flat feet, bunions, and any other foot deformities

Morton’s neuroma is a very treatable condition. Orthotics and shoe inserts can often be used to alleviate the pain on the forefront of the feet. An Ounce of Prevention for Kid’s Feet

Taking care of your children’s feet during infancy and early childhood can do a lot to help them have healthy feet as they grow. When a child shows signs of or complains of foot pain, it is wise to take them to a podiatrist to have their feet evaluated for possible problems. While children are born without arches and usually do not experience symptoms from this while they are in development, sometimes having flat feet can cause them to have problems participating in physical activities, impact their gait, or cause them pain or cramping in their feet, legs, or knees. Sever’s disease is an inflammation of the heel growth plate that can cause pain. This condition affects kids between 8 and 14 years of age or until the heel bone fully develops. Ingrown toenails can develop in children from wearing shoes that are too tight, cutting their toenails improperly, or a genetic predisposition. With this, a toenail can grow into the skin and a serious infection can result. These are just some of the problems that parents can encounter with their children’s feet. If you want to be educated on how to best care for growing feet or find that your child has foot issues, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can answer your questions and treat foot problems that arise.

Making sure that your children maintain good foot health is very important as they grow. If you have any questions, contact Joan Oloff, DPM of Los Gatos Foot and Ankle . Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

Having healthy feet during childhood can help prevent medical problems later in life, namely in the back and legs. As children grow, their feet require different types of care. Here are some things to consider...

Although babies do not walk yet, it is still very important to take care of their feet.

Avoid putting tight shoes or socks on his or her feet.

Allow the baby to stretch and kick his or her feet to feel comfortable.

As a toddler, kids are now on the move and begin to develop differently. At this age, toddlers are getting a feel for walking, so don’t be alarmed if your toddler is unsteady or ‘walks funny’.

As your child gets older, it is important to teach them how to take care of their feet.

Show them proper hygiene to prevent infections such as fungus.

Be watchful for any pain or injury.

Have all injuries checked by a doctor as soon as possible.

Comfortable, protective shoes should always be worn, especially at play.
